Open University to Expand in Mozambique as of 2015

An agreement signed on Monday (May 20) provides for the expansion of the Open University of Brazil (UAB) in Mozambique. As of 2015, over 2,000 places will be available in mathematics, biology, pedagogy and public administration courses. The document was signed by the Minister of Education, Aloizio Mercadante, during a meeting with leaders of Portuguese-speaking African countries.

The consolidation and expansion of the Open University in Mozambique is expected to be implemented in five Mozambican provinces, in addition to the three already in the program. The agreement sets out adjustments to the Open University infrastructure in the country, to be implemented by 2015, in order to provide for the expansion.

The Open University began activities in Mozambique in 2011. It currently provides courses to 630 students, with the first graduations set to take place next year.

The Open University operates with participation from partner universities, such as the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO), Fluminense Federal University (UFF), the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF) and the Federal University of Goiás (UFG), in addition to the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) and the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC).
