Main reason for the increase was the pre-salt oil supply, which reached an average of 1 million barrels per day in 2016
For the third consecutive year, Brazil recorded an increase in domestic oil production. Data from the National Petroleum Agency (ANP) show that in 2016 the increase was 3.2%, reaching 2.5 million barrels per day. The national production of natural gas increased by 7.9%, reaching 103.8 million cubic meters per day in the same period.
According to the agency, the main reason for the increase was the pre-salt oil supply, which reached an average of 1 million barrels a day last year, up 33.1%. In the same area, natural gas production continued to grow and totaled a 38.2% share of the national total produced in 2016.
"The results obtained in the pre-salt reinforce the attractiveness of the blocks of this geological horizon to be offered in the next rounds of bidding, with a calendar approved by the National Energy Policy Council (CNPE) for the next three years," explained the ANP in a statement This Monday (3).
Given these results, the country managed to reduce the need to import oil by 44.9%. Exports, on the other hand, grew 8.3% to an average of 798.2 thousand barrels per day, higher value of the historical series.
New rounds
This year, two new rounds of concession of pre-salt areas are planned. Together with other bids for oil and gas exploration, the estimate is that they generate from R $ 8.5 billion to R $ 9 billion to public coffers.
