BASIC unity on climate change is bringing developing country perspectives to science and solutions, Brazil's head of delegation says

Speaking today at the close of the fourth day of negotiations at COP17, Brazil's chief of delegation Ambassador André Corrêa do Lago stated that the country is open to analyzing the possibility of the new roadmap to 2020/2015 proposed by the European Union this week, commenting that: “Anything that strengthens the Convention and the Kyoto Protocol is interesting, but we have to check which elements Brazil will be comfortable with and, also, we have to hear the G77+China Group.”

On the topic of the future of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), Ambassador Corrêa  do Lago commented that this proven system has been one of the key successes of the Convention and warned that the future pf CDM may be in jeopardy if the second commitment phase of the Kyoto Protocol is not approved.

Finally, when asked in the daily press briefing about the strength of unity in the BASIC group, Ambassador do Lago stated that Brazil has seen it to be an effective group that is succeeding in bringing developing country perspectives to the science, study, and solutions to climate change.
