Even through is has nearly 200 pages of text, the Brazilian government believes in positive results for the third round of informal negotiations on the final document for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20). According to the Foreign Minister, Antonio Patriota, Brazil’s negotiators are working with “tenacity” in the debates that began on May 29 in New York, United States.

“The expectation is that we will advance the consolidation of a text that can be adopted at the conference. We also still have a session of the preparatory committee in Rio de Janeiro, prior to the higher level governmental session”, said Patriot.

The negotiations between groups of countries seeking consensus on the text, which will serve as the basis for the conference, ends on June 2. The Secretary-General of Rio+20, Sha Zukang, has already confirmed that this round of negotiations would need to complete at least 90% of the text. According to statements published on the event web page, Zukang argued that the most controversial points of difficult consensus among negotiators should be finalized during the conference, with greater political support.
