Performance
Products such as cassava, cotton and rice have pulled good crop yields
Data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply show that the gross value of agricultural production (VBP) for 2017, based on information for October, is R $ 533.5 billion . The performance translates into a 1.6% increase over 2016, which was R $ 525 billion . Livestock had a 5.8% drop in earnings.
The indicator is mainly driven by sales of cassava, with an increase of 88.2% in profits and also cotton, which grew by 73.56%, followed by sugarcane, with a 30.6% expansion. Fourth was the rice trade, whose expansion was 9.95% in gains.
According to José Garcia Gasques, the general coordinator of Studies and Analysis of the Secretariat of Agricultural Policy for the Map, the good result is also a consequence of the low prices of various products.
The Ministry of Agriculture's forecast is that this year's harvest be up to 227.5 million tons. Lower prices have reduced the production value of a large ratio of products. For some, the actual reduction is over 40%: onion, 47.5% and potato, 49.0%.
