Bioenergy to invest $3.8 billion to build wind farms in the northern state of Maranhao

Brasil Economico reported Thursday that Bioenergy, a Brazilian developer of wind and solar energy projects, plans to invest 6 billion Brazilian reais ($3.8 billion) to build wind farms in the northern state of Maranhao.

According to Economico, Bioenergy is developing 50 projects in the state which will have a capacity to generate 1,400 megawatts by 2015, the newspaper said, citing an interview with company President Sergio Marques.

The company is already seeking to sell power from its projects, and plans to offer 150 megawatts of capacity at an Aug. 17-18 energy auction in Brazil, Brasil Economico said.

The company is seeking funding through government and non-state banks and has acknowledged that financing the projects is one of the biggest challenges, Brasil Economico said. The company recently sold BRL58 million in bonds through an investment fund that includes Brazil's biggest pension funds, after raising BRL20 million in a previous sale through Banco Medial, the newspaper reported.

Bioenergy relies on debt from state-controlled banks for about 70% of capital needs; Marques told Dow Jones Newswires in March, when the company announced a BRL1.4-billion contract with General Electric (GE) to buy wind turbines.

Created in 2002, Bioenergy was one of the pioneers in the field of projects of renewable energy in Brazil. Throughout these years, the company has already conducted several projects in the northeastern region, which have been hired according to the guidelines of the Programme of Incentive for Alternative Sources (Proinfa).

Dominating the whole cycle of production of energy, the company carries out a comprehensive work to search and identify suitable areas to implant projects of generation of energy. The next step involves studies, the elaboration of projects, the procurement of certifications issued by the competent agencies, and, at last the implementation and start-up.

It means that every phase of the process is conducted with efficiency in order to ensure the success of operations. The company boasts always keeping pace with the advances in the field of energy, meeting the challenges of sustainability in accordance with the concept that development parallels protection for the environment.
